In many processes, harmful substances are handled, produced or treated in a way that dust, fumes or gases are released into the workplace.

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations place stringent and clearly defined responsibilities on employers to control the exposure of employees to such substances.

When the use of hazardous material cannot be prevented, adequate control of exposure should be achieved by a hierarchy of control measures including, where appropriate, Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV).
